Understanding Bipolar Disorder: Early Signs, Treatment Options, and Hope for Recovery
Mental disorders like bipolar disorder still carry a stigma, and their effects fall heavily not only on the patient but those around them. If you have concerns about a loved one’s mental state, getting a solid diagnosis is the place to start.
At Genesis Psychiatric Solutions, board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Ifeanye Olele can consult with your loved one and help diagnose them with bipolar disorder if that’s what is causing their symptoms.
Here’s what you can expect and what you can do to help.
Early signs of bipolar disorder
A hallmark of this condition is a cycle of mania and depression that can be rapid, slow, or even seasonal depending on the type of bipolar disorder.
Most people with undiagnosed bipolar disorder aren’t very self-aware. They live inside their symptoms and can’t see them. But a loved one may notice things seem a little off if there are signs such as:
Mania and depression
When a person with bipolar disorder is up, they are very up. Their mood is effervescent and bordering on hysterical. Their world can shrink or expand, and they have grand plans and ideas — even periods of extremely focused productivity. But you may also notice:
- Increased irritability or moodiness
- Impulsive behavior (like shopping sprees or reckless driving)
- Disregard for others and a sense of self-importance
- A new habit of speaking very fast and jumping from topic to topic
In contrast, a depressive episode presents with a different set of symptoms, which can include any of the following:
- Lethargy and fatigue
- Sleeping for as much as a 24-hour cycle at times
- Having insomnia but no energy to get out of bed
- Loss of interest in hobbies
- Feelings of guilt, uselessness, and/or self-hatred
- Changes in appetite
- Lack of self-care (not showering or changing clothes)
- Suicidal ideation or actions
Both manic and depressive episodes can be dangerous to the patient and those around them. Recognizing early symptoms means you can try to talk to your loved one and encourage them to seek help.
